Green River and Lake Powell Are Hot
Updated 6-20-08
Green River will be the place to fly fish during the next couple weeks. Flows are dropping and cicadas are responding to our hot, stable weather. Expect crowded conditions and good success.Lower Provo is high and Middle Provo is very high. The Lower is still fishing well but the Middle is difficult under these conditions. Steve Schmidt reports: "Yesterdays flows on the Lower were 781 ft3/s. The river was fishing well with smaller Golden Stoneflies and a smattering of PMD's. The Middle at this level is truly a challenge to fish. Things were looking so good too, the timing is unfortunate. My guess is this will push back the hatches at least another week..." Weber River has been fishing well but flows are up there and that is inhabiting success.
Lake Powell fishing is good right now and will probably become red hot in 2-3 weeks, as runoff ends and fish settle into more predictable patterns. The big lake is still rising, albeit at a slower rate because runoff has peaked. There is still a tremendous amount of muddy water and driftwood on the upper lake. Wayne Gustaveson expects the upper lake to offer very good fishing as the water clears.
"The good news is a large shad spawn occurred in the upper lake," Wayne said. "These small fish are protected from intense predation by low visibility. As soon as the small stripers can see shad there will be day-long boils in the upper lake." Read his full report.
Flaming George lake trout fishing has been very good recently, and of course smallmouth bass action is hot there at this time of year.
Trout in reservoirs will move deeper soon, as waters warm. Shore fishing is good now but will become more challenging as fish go deep. They will be near the surface early and late in the day - you can find them at those times fishing flies and lures from tubes and boats. During the day most trout will be caught bait fishing in deeper water or trolling deep.
Many streams and reservoirs offer good fishing. See DWR's weekly fishing reports for details.
